Offloading not to curb genuine travel, claims FIA chief
ISLAMABAD: Federal Investigation Agency Director General Dr Usman Anwar on Monday said that offloading was a “lawful, preventive, and protective measure” used only where credible risk indicators exist. “The objective is to facilitate lawful travel while protecting the country’s citizens, safeguarding human lives, countering organised criminal networks, and preserving the country’s international reputation,” the FIA chief said while talking to reporters here. Dr Anwar
The Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency, Dr. Usman Anwar, recently defended the practice of offloading passengers at international airports, describing it as a necessary security protocol rather than a restriction on legitimate travel. He emphasized that these measures are specifically designed to dismantle human smuggling operations and protect citizens from the dangers associated with illegal migration. According to the agency, enhanced screening processes have already led to a significant reduction in irregular migration flows toward Europe and effectively halted illegal transit through Malawi.
Dr. Anwar highlighted that criminal networks frequently exploit specific transit corridors in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Cyprus to deceive vulnerable individuals with fraudulent promises of employment and residency. The FIA’s 2025 risk assessment identifies these trafficking routes as major threats, noting a particular surge in risky migration patterns among youth in parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. By focusing on intelligence-led interventions, the agency aims to prevent exploitation and uphold the nation's international standing.
The clarification addresses public concerns regarding travel restrictions while highlighting the government's strategic shift toward intelligence-led enforcement to combat human trafficking and organized crime.
