Auditor general: Latvia's Rail Baltica delay will end up costing Estonia

Estonia’s Auditor General Janar Holm has warned that construction delays in Latvia threaten the overall timeline and financial viability of the Rail Baltica project. While Estonian officials maintain that their portion of the high-speed railway remains on track for a 2030 completion, they emphasize that the initiative is an international obligation linked to broader European transport corridors. Latvian authorities currently face a significant funding shortfall of approximately €3.7 billion, prompting discussions regarding potential solutions such as public-private partnerships or European Union financing instruments. Despite these logistical and budgetary hurdles, Estonian project leaders insist that their technical capacity to meet the 2030 deadline remains intact.
