'A significant cost for us' - Tax credit changes to hit charity sector
Charities are already hearing from some big donors indicating that they will not be able to give as much in the next year.
New government regulations set to take effect next April will place a $33,000 annual limit on tax credits for charitable donations. Under the current system, donors can claim a rebate of one-third of their contributions, provided the total does not exceed one-third of their taxable income. The new policy effectively caps the tax benefit once a donor's contributions reach $100,000. Philanthropy New Zealand warns that this shift will negatively impact approximately 350 major donors, with some already indicating they plan to reduce their financial support. Industry leaders argue that the change could jeopardize essential community services, including youth programs and infrastructure projects that rely on large-scale private funding. While the government suggests the policy aims to curb potential misuse of the tax system, charities fear it sends a discouraging message to those who contribute significantly to the social fabric of the country.
The policy change threatens to reduce the funding pool for essential community services by disincentivizing large-scale philanthropic contributions.
