The Akureyri Museum has received the final pieces of a significant historical map collection, generously donated by German collector Karl-Werner Schulte. On his 80th birthday, Schulte formally presented the last maps to the museum, completing a donation that, along with his late wife Gisela Schulte-Daxbök, totals 212 items. This extensive collection, which began with a map purchased during a honeymoon in 1975, features maps dating back to 1507 and covers Iceland, Scandinavia, the North Atlantic, and the British Isles. The maps have been donated to Akureyri since 2014 and are now preserved and accessible to the public.
This donation significantly enhances Akureyri's cultural heritage and establishes its museum as a world-class repository for historical Icelandic cartography.
