The Honduran parliament has approved a significant amendment to the penal code, increasing the maximum prison sentence for femicide to 60 years. This measure comes as Honduras faces the highest rate of femicides in Latin America. While the base sentence remains between 25 and 30 years, aggravating circumstances, particularly those involving gender-based violence or kidnapping resulting in death, can now lead to sentences up to six decades. The new legislation also establishes specialized, all-female judicial bodies aimed at preventing such crimes.
This legislative change reflects a heightened national response to the severe issue of femicide, aiming to deter perpetrators through stricter penalties in a country with alarmingly high rates of these crimes.
