The Ukrainian tiger Mir has departed from the Nature Rescue Centre in Oudsbergen, Belgium, for a new sanctuary in South Africa. His relocation, initially planned for two weeks ago, was delayed due to administrative issues, which have now been resolved. Mir arrived in Belgium in February after being illegally kept as a pet and was brought to the center when his owner fled Ukraine during the Russian invasion.
Officials at the rescue center stated that Mir requires a much larger habitat than they could provide. The new facility in Johannesburg, South Africa, offers a specialized enclosure nearly a hectare in size, designed for large felines. Releasing Mir into the wild is not an option due to his habituation to humans and lack of wild hunting skills.
This relocation is significant because it ensures a more suitable and spacious environment for a tiger rescued from difficult circumstances, highlighting international cooperation in animal welfare.
