Bosnia and Herzegovina's economy is facing a significant challenge with the implementation of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). As 70% of the country's exports go to the EU market, domestic companies must adapt to these new regulations. CBAM aims to level the playing field for businesses operating within and outside the EU, preventing the relocation of production from the Union.

Initially, CBAM covers six product categories, with plans to expand its scope. Bosnian companies must submit verified reports on their greenhouse gas emissions to avoid higher, EU-set emission values. While some sectors, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises involved in low-energy finishing processes, may see limited impact due to low CO2 emissions and exclusions for certain materials like aluminum, others will need to prepare for potential costs.

The CBAM is crucial for Bosnian businesses as it directly impacts their access to the EU market, their largest export destination, and requires them to account for their carbon emissions.
