DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have entered a critical phase, with senior government officials reviewing progress on key projects and coordination efforts aimed at ensuring the country is ready to co-host Africa’s football showpiece Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities) , Dr Jim Yonazi chaired a meeting of Permanent Secretaries in Dar es Salaam to assess milestones achieved so far and chart the way forward for the tournament, which Tanzania will co-host with Kenya and Uganda. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dar es Salaam brought together top government officials responsible for overseeing various sectors involved in the preparations, including infrastructure, transport, security, health, hospitality and communications. Addressing the meeting, Dr Yonazi called for greater collaboration and professionalism among institutions tasked with delivering the tournament, saying coordinated action would be crucial to meeting timelines and achieving the desired outcomes. He urged all sectors to remain focused on their respective mandates while strengthening inter-agency cooperation to ensure Tanzania successfully hosts the continental showpiece and leaves a lasting legacy. “Each sector should continue to execute its responsibilities efficiently in order to deliver positive results,” he said. Dr Yonazi noted that hosting AFCON 2027 presents a significant opportunity for Tanzania to showcase its growing capacity to stage major international events, attract investment and tourism, and enhance the country’s profile across Africa and beyond. The Permanent Secretary also commended members of the committee for the progress recorded so far and reaffirmed the Prime Minister’s Office’s commitment to coordinating preparations through a whole-of-government approach. The 2027 tournament will be the first AFCON edition to be jointly hosted by the East African trio of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, marking a historic moment for the region and raising expectations for improved sports infrastructure and economic opportunities linked to the competition.
