Pottery firm saved as ex-Burberry boss leads rescue deal

Burleigh is being taken on by investors, including former Burberry Group CEO Christopher Bailey.

A world-famous pottery firm says it has been acquired by a group of investors following the closure of its parent firm.

Burleigh said production at its Middleport Pottery base in Stoke-on-Trent would continue without interruption after it was taken on by former Burberry Group chief executive, Christopher Bailey, and a small group of investors.

"I have always loved Burleigh pottery," Bailey said. "This company has an extraordinary history, and what makes it so special today is the skill, care and creative spirit that continue to define the business."

The business was founded in 1851 and has gone on to become one of the country's best-known ceramic brands.

The company, also known as Burgess and Leigh, uses craft traditions such as a tissue transfer printing technique to create its products.

The company said it was the last heritage pottery in the world still using this traditional method by hand.

The new investment would mean the craft would be preserved, they added.

"I am deeply committed to protecting and showcasing the craftsmanship and character that makes Burleigh unique, while helping to shape its future as a distinctive and meaningful British design and ceramics house," Bailey said.

Denby Pottery, which owned Burleigh, was founded in Derbyshire in 1809.

Administrators were appointed at Denby on 31 March after the firm struggled with rising energy and labour costs, ultimately leading to more than 130 workers being made redundant.

The final piece of Denby Pottery was signed by Richard Eaton, the man who designed the range more than 35 years ago.
