European authorities are sounding the alarm over a surge in synthetic opioids, particularly nitazenes and orphines, which are increasingly appearing on the illicit drug market. These potent substances, comparable to fentanyl, are significantly more powerful than traditional opiates and are contributing to a rise in drug-related fatalities across the continent. Seizures of counterfeit pills containing nitazenes have dramatically increased, with authorities confiscating over 50,000 such tablets in 2024 alone across ten countries. The European Drug Agency (EUDA) warns that these drugs can spread rapidly and cause severe harm before control mechanisms can react, with only small quantities capable of producing thousands of lethal doses.
The proliferation of potent synthetic opioids poses a severe and escalating threat to public health in Europe, leading to an increase in overdose deaths and complicating drug control efforts.
