Cypriot composer turns Shanghai’s sounds into groundbreaking audiovisual opera

By Karen Taylor Meaning City on the Sea, Shanghai is one of the most populous cities in China. A technological and financial hub, it is fast paced and high tech. It is also noisy. But what is this noise made up of? This is a question posed by Cypriot composer Marios Joannou Elia, whose latest cinematic audiovisual project, aptly called the Sound of Shanghai, is dedicated to all the sounds the city, including its modern seafront and ancient heart, makes. “Undoubtedly, Shanghai

Cypriot composer Marios Joannou Elia has created a unique audiovisual opera titled "The Sound of Shanghai," transforming the bustling Chinese metropolis into a musical experience. Elia meticulously gathered over 6,500 audiovisual fragments from more than 90 locations, utilizing over 250 musicians to construct a "three-dimensional sonic experience." The project intricately weaves together the city's diverse soundscape, from its modern waterfront to its historic core, with elements reflecting both Shanghai's and Cyprus's cultural heritage. Traditional Chinese arts like Gu Embroidery and shadow puppetry are represented through their distinct sounds, mirrored by similar artistic traditions found in Cyprus, such as Lefkara lace and Karagiozis shadow theatre.

This innovative project highlights how artistic interpretation can bridge cultural divides and reveal unexpected connections between seemingly disparate global cities.
