A committee headed by District Collector Chetan Kumar Meena has completed its inspections as part of the process of formulating a plan to address the traffic woes in Kottayam town. In the second phase of the exercise, the committee carried out site visits at key locations, including Caritas Junction, Sankranthi, Kumaranallur, Choottuveli, SH Mount, and Nagampadam along the MC Road on Monday. Prior to this, inspections were conducted at Thiruvathukkal and Erayilkadavu, as well as in the stretch from Chingavanam to Pulimood Junction and in Kanjikuzhi. Mr. Meena said a preliminary report based on these inspections would be prepared shortly.

The team conducted the inspections in accordance with the decision taken at a meeting convened by Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on June 1. The meeting had also constituted a team comprising the District Collector, District Police Chief A. Shahul Hameed and officials from various departments to examine the possibility of urgent reorganisation at locations experiencing severe traffic congestion.

The inspection team included municipal chairman M.P. Santosh Kumar, Kottayam RTO D. Jayaraj, PWD NH section executive engineer John Kenneth, PWD executive engineer T.S. Jayaraj, maintenance section executive engineer T.R. Jeeja, assistant executive engineer Maya K. Nair, Water Authority executive engineer Anil Raj, and NH section assistant executive engineer A.S. Sura.

According to the authorities, the government intends to develop specialised plans and schemes to address the traffic woes in the town and its surrounding areas, encompassing both immediate restructuring measures and long-term implementation strategies.

Officials said a final decision on the subsequent course of action would be taken after detailed discussions on the draft report submitted by the committee. “A long-term plan for traffic reform will be prepared keeping in view the development of the town and the surrounding areas. NATPAC will be tasked with conducting a detailed study
