The heavy rains that lashed the central Travancore districts of Kottayam and Pathanamthitta over the past couple of days without a break have kept the region on the edge.

Water levels have surged across all major rivers, including the Manimala, the Pampa, and the Meenachil. Preparations are also under way to evacuate families in the event of flooding in the low-lying areas of the Upper and North Kuttanad region.

While the western low-lying areas are bracing for potential flooding, the eastern high ranges remain under the looming threat of landslips. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert and prepared. They have already opened a relief camp at Kaviyoor in Thiruvalla taluk, which currently accommodates four families.

The continuous downpour over the Sabarimala forests has led to a significant inflow into the district’s dams. The water level in the Pampa reservoir climbed to 966.2 metres, while the level in the Kakki reservoir reached 942.177.39 metres.
