A police constable attached to the Vriddhchalam police station has been suspended after a preliminary enquiry confirmed he assaulted three youngsters and snatched their mobile phone.
Police said Ranjith, a constable was assigned to security duty at a picket in Kottakuppam in Villupuram district on Saturday (June 6). But Ranjith failed to report for duty and was seen riding a two-wheeler with history-sheeter Subash, alias Subash Chandrabose, on Sunday.
The duo, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, intercepted three youngsters riding triples on a motorcycle near the Anna Nagar watertank in Vriddhachalam. The duo assaulted the youth with a lathi and snatched a mobile phone from them. Following a complaint, Ranjith and the history-sheeter were arrested.
A preliminary enquiry was ordered by Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar into the incident following which Ranjith was placed under suspension.
