The Banks Temporary Substaff Contract Workers Joint Action Committee has urged the Union government to declare minimum wage under one nation policy on the lines of the order announced by the State government for minimum wages for all sectors.

In letters sent to Union Minister for Labour Mansuk Mandaviya and Union Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje, president of the committee M. Rama Rao has referred to the various notifications issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment announcing different minimum wages and different Variable Dearness Allowance for different sectors and has urged the Union government to make it uniform for all the sectors.

Mr. Rama Rao has said that although the Union government believes in applying one nation one policy for all issues, it has, however, declared different minimum wages for different sectors and also different Variable Dearness Allowance for different sectors once in six months.

Referring to the State government’s notification on May 2 declaring minimum wages for all sectors with common Variable Dearness Allowance once in a year, he has said that there is a glaring difference in the minimum wage structure of the State government and the Union government causing loss to minimum wage workers of Central government in Karnataka.

“The rate of minimum wage for the lowest category of sweeper/cleaning is ₹556 in Central government, while it is ₹817.36 even in the remotest place in Karnataka in any industry/sector. The minimum wage declared by the State government is much higher by 50% of the minimum wage declared by the Central government,” he has pointed out.

He has urged the Ministers to take up the issue with the Union government to rectify the difference by declaring one minimum wage for all sectors of workers.
