An awareness programme against the use of plastic within the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve was conducted during the Masikarupendaiyan temple festival in The Nilgiris.
The three-day campaign was organised between June 7 and 9.The temple is located inside the forest near Anaikatti village and is managed by the local Irula tribal community.
“The festival is traditionally celebrated every year after the onset of the first monsoon rains, when water begins to flow in the nearby river. Devotees from different parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala participate in this festival. The awareness programme was jointly organised by Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and Eco Voice Trust. During the festival, awareness was created among devotees on the importance of avoiding single-use plastics, preventing forest fires, and not littering liquor bottles and other waste in the forest area,” a press release stated.
S. Manikandan, Founder of Eco Voice Trust, stated that awareness programmes have been conducted continuously for the past three years during the festival. He observed that this year the Forest Department implemented strict protocols to ensure eco-friendly celebrations. Forest staff from various locations in the Nilgiris, along with police personnel and volunteers, actively participated in maintaining discipline and managing the festival, he said.
