The paving project on the PR-364 highway in Paraná, Brazil, is set to resume in July after a nine-month suspension. The halt was caused by the discovery of fossils belonging to Mesosaurus brasiliensis, ancient aquatic reptiles that lived approximately 280 million years ago, predating dinosaurs. The environmental license for the work was initially canceled due to concerns that the state's Water and Land Institute (IAT) had not properly consulted the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) during the licensing process. The state's Department of Roadways (DER-PR) has implemented a paleontological management program, collecting and transferring eight fossil samples to Unicentro for analysis and preservation.
The resumption of this roadwork is significant as it allows for the completion of infrastructure improvements while addressing the preservation of important paleontological discoveries.
