The Women and Child Development department has directed anganwadis to adopt preventive measures against shigellosis to keep children safe in the wake of the bacterial diarrhoeal disease being reported from multiple districts in the State.

Shigellosis can be fatal for children under five years, in whom the highest mortality is reported. Since two deaths have been reported so far, both in children under the age of five, the department has asked Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme officers to organise, in association with district medical officers, training programmes for anganwadi workers and helpers to help them understand the gravity of the situation, remain alert, and prevent the spread of the disease. District Women and Child Development officers should monitor the programmes.

When shigellosis was reported in Kozhikode back in March, the department had issued a set of guidelines for anganwadis to follow in order to keep the children safe. These directions should continue to be followed, according to a circular issued by the Women and Child Development Director.

If the symptoms of shigellosis appear in the children, the Health department should be informed and necessary steps be taken. Any anganwadi reporting a case of shigellosis should stop functioning temporarily and reopen on the directions of the Health department.

If any anganwadi worker or helper show symptoms of shigellosis, they should seek immediate treatment. Only boiled and cooled water should be given to children for drinking. It should be ensured that the children are drinking adequate water. The anganwadi staff should ensure hygiene while cooking and serving food.
