A recent scientific study estimates there are approximately 20 quadrillion ants on Earth, a number derived from analyzing data from nearly 500 different research studies on ant density across various global locations. While it was once thought the total weight of all ants might equal that of all humans, newer research using carbon mass offers a different perspective. Scientists calculated the total carbon mass of all ants to be around 12 megatons. In comparison, the estimated carbon mass of the global human population is approximately 60 megatons.
This comparison highlights the immense biomass of ants and their significant, often underestimated, role in global ecosystems and biodiversity.
