The world has become less peaceful for the twelfth consecutive year, according to the latest Global Peace Index. The report, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, ranks 163 countries based on safety, conflict, and militarization. Iceland remains the most peaceful nation, while Russia is ranked as the least peaceful. The index highlights a record number of active interstate conflicts, the highest since World War II, with 103 countries involved in external conflicts.
This global decline in peace is attributed partly to the "Great Fragmentation," a shift in international relations where traditional European powers are losing influence to a growing number of "middle powers." The report also notes the increasing role of artificial intelligence and drones in warfare, with machines now making life-and-death decisions faster than humans.
The increasing global fragmentation and the evolving nature of warfare, driven by AI and drones, pose significant challenges to international stability and conflict resolution.
