ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed that the privatisation of power distribution companies (DISCOs) be “accelerated”, reiterating that offloading loss-making state-owned enterprises (SOEs) was a priority for the government. A high-level meeting confirmed that Islamabad Electric Supply Company, Gujranwala Electric Power Company, and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company will be the first to be privatized. The process will involve complete transparency and the establishment of a strong regulatory framework post-transition. Expressions of interest have been published, and international roadshows are planned to attract investors from Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and China.
This initiative aims to improve the efficiency and financial health of the power sector by transferring management to private entities.
