How a three-day invasion has surpassed World War One and threatens global catastrophe
More than 100 years later, the technology has changed, but there remain remarkable similarities between the First World War and the war in Ukraine. Once again hundreds of thousands of lives have wasted to move battle lines meagre distances and the world is at a tipping point.
The conflict in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, is approaching the duration of World War One. Initially anticipated to be a swift Russian victory, the war has instead seen Ukrainian forces gain the advantage on multiple fronts. Despite significant monthly casualties for Russia, comparable in some aspects to the Great War's attrition, neither side has achieved decisive breakthroughs.
Both conflicts share characteristics of rapid initial advances being halted, leading to static warfare where defensive technologies create heavily fortified zones. Technological innovations, from tanks and poison gas in WWI to drones and cruise missiles in Ukraine, have been employed to overcome these stalemates, widening the scale of destruction.
The prolonged and attritional nature of the Ukraine war, mirroring historical conflicts, highlights the devastating potential of modern warfare and the risks of global escalation.
