Australia’s most magnificent island left me overwhelmed – and horrified
Just before I leaving one of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited, I saw something that appalled me.
A recent expedition to Macquarie Island, a remote Australian sub-Antarctic territory, offered a stark contrast of natural wonder and historical exploitation. Visitors were awestruck by the sheer abundance of wildlife, particularly the tens of thousands of king penguins congregating on beaches, making landings impossible. The island, discovered in 1810, was once considered for a penal colony but is now a vital breeding ground for over 1.5 million penguins and 80,000 elephant seals.
Macquarie Island's ecological significance highlights the devastating impact of past sealing and whaling industries on wildlife populations and the ongoing importance of conservation efforts.
