Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere announced his intention to veto a proposed amendment that could alter the environmental protection area in the Bairro Peixoto neighborhood. This amendment, part of the Praça Onze Maravilha program, was criticized by residents for potentially allowing buildings up to 11 stories high, which would disrupt the area's established low-rise character. The original environmental protection area, created in 1989, limits new constructions to 15 meters in height. Cavaliere stated that while the final version of the bill is pending, the specific amendment concerning Bairro Peixoto will be vetoed. The mayor emphasized transparency in the legislative process but assured residents that this particular change would not be sanctioned.
