Climate change has already made Australians in one state much poorer, and more’s to come
The world’s hottest years over the past decade have coincided with stagnant economic productivity, rising prices and geopolitical instability. Is this just coincidence or has the current level of climate change been one of the drivers? Climate change is often framed as a problem for the future. But how much economic damage has today’s current level of ~1.35°C of warming already caused? To answer that question, we analysed the effects of climate change to date on the New South
New research indicates that climate change has already had a significant negative impact on the economy of New South Wales, Australia. The study estimates median economic losses of approximately 18%, translating to an average yearly income reduction of about A$21,300 per person. These losses are primarily driven by global weather pattern shifts affecting the cost of living, rather than solely by local extreme weather events like bushfires or floods. The findings suggest that current economic challenges, including stagnant productivity and rising prices, may be partly attributable to the ~1.35°C of global warming experienced to date.
This research highlights that the economic consequences of climate change are not a distant future threat but are already impacting livelihoods and national economies today.
