In Piauí, 210 children and adolescents have been adopted since 2019, according to the National Adoption and Guardianship System (SNA). Notably, none of these adoptions involved children or adolescents with physical or intellectual disabilities. Currently, six children with physical and intellectual disabilities and three with intellectual disabilities are available for adoption in the state. This situation highlights the significant challenges this group faces in finding families.
Nationally, out of over 33,000 adoptions, a small percentage involved children with disabilities. Experts attribute the low numbers in Piauí to societal ableism and idealized expectations surrounding adoption, where the disability is often perceived as an insurmountable barrier to forming family bonds.
The data underscores a critical gap in inclusive adoption practices, revealing societal biases and a lack of awareness that prevent children with disabilities from finding permanent homes.
