Rhinos return to billionaire-backed Zimbabwe park after 1990s wipe out
Bloomberg Black rhinos are being reintroduced into a billionaire-backed national park in Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Valley three decades after almost all of them were evacuated to protect them from poachers. The number of black rhinos in the valley fell to 400 in the early 1990s from about 3 500 a decade prior because of a surge in illegal hunters crossing from Zambia who targeted the critically endangered species for their horns. Seventeen black rhinos have been reintroduced to Matusadona National Park in Zimbabwe's Zambezi Valley, marking a significant return for the species after a near-total wipeout in the 1990s due to poaching. The animals were originally evacuated from the park three decades ago when their numbers plummeted from 3,500 to 400. The current reintroduction effort, partly funded by Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss and managed by African Parks, aims to re-establish a viable population in the reserve.
This initiative represents a crucial step in the long-term conservation of the critically endangered black rhino and highlights successful collaborative efforts in combating poaching and restoring wildlife populations.
