This outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, was initially declared on May 15th but saw a lull in new infections, complicating containment efforts. The epidemic is now affecting three conflict-ridden provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, impacting 17, seven, and one health zones respectively. While 22 patients have recovered, health officials urge the public to seek immediate medical attention for symptoms like fever and vomiting and to cooperate with healthcare workers. Community mistrust and attacks on medical personnel and burial teams have hindered containment, with aid groups calling for urgent funding to prevent further spread.
The escalating number of cases and the challenges in containment highlight the ongoing threat of Ebola in a region already struggling with conflict and resource scarcity.
