In Bangladesh, 273 individuals convicted of crimes against women and children are currently held in condemned cells awaiting execution. While 2,707 prisoners are under death sentence overall, only 26 executions have been carried out for such offenses since independence, with 19 stemming from murder after rape. The lengthy judicial process, including the 'death reference' review by the High Court, often causes significant delays, leaving victims' families in fear of retaliation from the convicts' relatives. The case of Samina, a teenager burned to death in 2005 for dowry, exemplifies this; her husband and five others were sentenced to death in 2018, but the sentence remains unexecuted after eight years, and her mother continues to face threats.

The protracted legal process for death penalty cases undermines the swift delivery of justice and leaves victims' families vulnerable to intimidation, eroding public trust in the legal system.
