Researchers have captured the subtle sounds emanating from Pando, one of the Earth's largest living organisms, a clonal colony of quaking aspen trees in Utah. Sound artist Jeff Rice used a hydrophone placed near the root system to record vibrations, which he believes are generated by the rustling of its millions of leaves. These faint sounds, amplified during a thunderstorm, travel through the tree's structure and into the ground, offering a unique auditory perspective on this ancient, massive entity. The recordings also demonstrated sound transmission across significant distances through the organism, suggesting a deep interconnectedness.
Understanding the unique biological and physical processes of massive, ancient organisms like Pando can provide insights into ecosystem resilience and the complex ways life adapts and communicates.
