A recent survey by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) indicates that a majority of Europeans favor increasing defense spending and acquiring more European-made weaponry. This trend suggests a growing emphasis on bolstering continental defense capabilities. The study, which surveyed over 18,000 individuals across 15 European nations, found broad support for enhanced military readiness, with Italy being the notable exception where more respondents opposed budget increases. Furthermore, most participants expressed a preference for sourcing arms from within Europe rather than from external partners like the United States, with Poland being the only country where a majority favored US arms purchases. The findings also reveal a widespread expectation among Europeans that they cannot rely solely on the US for protection, though a majority anticipate some European allies would offer assistance in an attack.
The survey highlights a significant shift in European public opinion towards greater defense autonomy and investment, potentially influencing future security policies and intercontinental defense relations.
