Fear of Ukrainian drones empties the guesthouses in Latvia's Land of Blue Lakes
REZEKNE, Latvia, June 10 - At Birdwhistles Guesthouse, in a rustic two-storey wooden barn in the Latvian forest 50 km from the Russian border, all eight rooms are vacant, which absolutely never happens this time of year, says the owner, Martins Kiscenko.
Guesthouses in Latvia's Latgale region, known as the Land of Blue Lakes, are experiencing an unusual lack of bookings. Owners report that typically busy establishments are now empty, a stark contrast to previous years. This downturn is attributed to concerns stemming from the proximity of the Ukrainian conflict and the potential threat of drone activity.
The fear of conflict spillover is impacting tourism in border regions, highlighting the broader economic and social consequences of the war in Ukraine.
