Myanmar's military junta has gained an advantage in the ongoing civil war following the implementation of a mandatory conscription law in 2024. This law has significantly bolstered the junta's forces by forcibly enlisting a large number of individuals. Additionally, security agreements with Russia have provided further support to the military government. In contrast, rebel groups are facing severe shortages of funds and weapons, forcing them into defensive positions across many regions and halting their previous advances. Many young men, like those interviewed, are forcibly recruited and sent to the front lines with little training, leading some to desert and join resistance forces.
The shift in the civil war's momentum, driven by conscription and external support for the junta, is reshaping the conflict and impacting the lives of ordinary citizens.
