The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with an Ebola outbreak that has claimed 115 lives as of Monday. Health officials reported 48 new cases in the preceding 24 hours, bringing the total number of individuals hospitalized or in isolation to 297. While 22 people have recovered, the contact tracing rate has fallen below 65%, and the fatality rate stands at 19.2%. The outbreak, initially declared in Ituri province on May 15th, has since spread to North Kivu and South Kivu, and has also crossed into Uganda, where 19 cases have been recorded, including two deaths. This particular strain of Ebola, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, lacks approved vaccines or treatments, unlike previous outbreaks caused by the Zaire strain.
This situation is critical due to the spread of a deadly and untreatable strain of Ebola, posing a significant public health threat in the region and potentially beyond.
