NEW YORK, United States: TANZANIA has outlined progress in strengthening disability rights frameworks at the 19th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP19), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Deputy Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Engineer Maryprisca Mahindi, said Tanzania has reinforced legal, policy and institutional systems to guarantee equal rights, opportunities and access to services for persons with disabilities. She cited the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 9 of 2010 for Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar’s Persons with Disabilities Act No. 8 of 2022 as key legal frameworks supporting protection of rights and welfare. Disability inclusion has also been integrated into the National Development Vision 2050 and other national development plans, she added. The government has expanded services in inclusive education, healthcare, rehabilitation and therapy, assistive technologies, economic empowerment programmes, and social protection for persons with disabilities. She further commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for supporting efforts to improve services and expand opportunities for persons with disabilities. She led the Tanzanian delegation to the conference on behalf of the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament and Coordination), Professor Palamagamba Kabudi. Tanzania’s participation reflects continued efforts to advance equality, inclusion, and welfare for persons with disabilities while engaging in the international exchange of best practices.
