ZANZIBAR: PRESIDENT of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) in recognition of its significant contribution to education and national development. Dr Mwinyi made the remarks today, June 10, 2026, during a meeting with a delegation from the Open University of Tanzania at the State House in Zanzibar. The delegation was led by the university’s Chancellor and former Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Peter Pinda. The President commended the university for expanding access to higher education through its open and distance learning system, which has enabled people from different professional backgrounds to pursue further studies without disrupting their daily responsibilities. He pledged continued cooperation with the institution to strengthen the provision of educational services in Zanzibar and create more opportunities for citizens to advance academically. Dr Mwinyi also assured the university that the government would consider its request for land to establish a major education coordination centre in Unguja. The President underscored the importance of sustaining the university’s services across both sides of the United Republic of Tanzania, noting that education remains a key pillar for social and economic development. Speaking during the meeting, Mr Pinda said the university plans to construct permanent coordination centres in Zanzibar to reduce the costs associated with renting premises and enhance its institutional visibility through its own infrastructure. He noted that the planned facilities would strengthen the university’s operations and improve service delivery to students in Zanzibar.
