The Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing instability within Islami Bank, warning that the situation impacts the entire banking sector. ABB Chairman and City Bank MD, Mashrur Arefin, conveyed these concerns after a meeting with the Bangladesh Bank Governor. The Governor acknowledged the issue as both a banking and political concern, with efforts underway for a resolution among stakeholders. He also urged bank CEOs to resist political pressure and ensure accurate reporting to the Credit Information Bureau (CIB). Discussions also covered a government initiative to create BDT 60 billion in new funds to boost SME lending through central bank refinancing programs. Additionally, the meeting addressed discrepancies in export-import data reporting, particularly concerning the valuation of imported goods, and emphasized the need for accurate international price verification for LCs to prevent national economic loss.

The instability in a major bank like Islami Bank can have ripple effects across the entire financial system, affecting depositor confidence, credit flow, and overall economic stability.
