Interview: Bacterial resistance risks deaths from simple infections
The world is facing a silent pandemic that many don’t even notice – antimicrobial resistance. Bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics and threatening the lives of many people, says professor Dimitri Van der Linden, a paediatric infectious disease specialist from Belgium, in an interview with Latvian Radio's Laura Dzērve.
Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, is a growing global threat that is often overlooked. Bacteria are increasingly developing defenses against antibiotics, turning previously manageable infections into life-threatening conditions. This phenomenon is being described as a silent pandemic by experts.
This escalating resistance jeopardizes modern medicine by making common treatments ineffective, potentially leading to increased mortality from simple infections.
