The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, initiated by Russia on February 24, 2022, has surpassed the duration of World War I. Initial Kremlin expectations for a swift conclusion have been unmet, with the war now entering its third year. Despite significant initial territorial gains, Russia has experienced substantial losses since March 2022, resulting in minimal net territorial gains. Recent Ukrainian drone attacks have targeted key Russian infrastructure, including oil terminals in St. Petersburg and supply routes in occupied Crimea, causing disruptions and shortages.
The prolonged and costly nature of the war, coupled with recent Ukrainian successes in targeting Russian logistics and symbolic locations, highlights the diminishing returns and increasing challenges for Russia's military objectives.
