Pakistan’s prized trout under threat as climate change, overfishing take toll
Gilgit-Baltistan region, famed for its towering peaks, vast glaciers and pristine lakes, is facing a sharp decline in its prized trout population as climate change, habitat loss and overfishing threaten the species. Its icy, glacier-fed waters provide an ideal environment for the breeding of trout, one of Pakistan’s most prized freshwater fish. In recent years, however, the trout population has drastically reduced due to a slew of climate and human-induced factors, which incl
Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region is experiencing a significant decline in its native trout population, a prized freshwater species. Experts estimate a 50% reduction in trout numbers over the last two decades, attributed to a combination of climate change impacts and human activities. Flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods have damaged crucial spawning habitats by altering water quality and sediment composition. Additionally, overfishing, facilitated by improved road infrastructure, and the construction of hydropower projects lacking fish migration systems are severely impacting trout survival and breeding cycles.
The decline of the trout population threatens a valuable natural resource and local livelihoods in a region heavily reliant on its pristine environment.
