Authorities in Hong Kong have charged seven individuals and two companies in connection with the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire that claimed 168 lives. The charges include manslaughter, conspiracy to defraud, and tax evasion, stemming from alleged gross negligence and safety violations during a renovation project. The firms involved, Prestige Construction & Engineering and Will Power Architects, are accused of failing in their duty of care and using substandard materials, such as non-flame-retardant netting and flammable foam boards. Investigations also revealed the removal of windows from emergency escape stairwells and bid rigging to favor one of the companies.

These charges highlight the critical importance of regulatory oversight and corporate accountability in construction projects to prevent catastrophic loss of life.
