Estonian municipalities test Starlink to bolster crisis readiness

Estonian municipalities are currently conducting trials of Starlink satellite internet terminals as part of a national initiative to enhance crisis preparedness. These tests are integrated into the ongoing "Exercise Ilves," a significant national defense drill. The initiative aims to provide reliable internet access, crucial for crisis headquarters and resilience centers, especially in situations where traditional communication networks might fail. Municipalities are being equipped with Starlink terminals, with some acquiring them independently and others receiving them from state reserves. The system is designed to offer both internet connectivity and voice call capabilities, powered by generators if necessary, and is considered a swift solution for emergency data communication.
