District Collector Sumit Kumar directed the mango pulp industries on Wednesday to reasonably increase procurement prices and implement farmer-friendly measures during the current mango season.

Addressing a coordination meeting with representatives of the mango pulp units here, the Collector highlighted that mango farmers should receive remunerative prices and that market fluctuations should not cause them any losses. He directed the units to increase mango procurement rates from June 20 and continue the revised prices till August.

Mr. Sumit Kumar underscored the need for transparency in procurement and informed the pulp industries to ensure that farmers face no hardships while marketing their produce.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media, the Collector observed that “Totapuri” variety mango farmers should harvest fruits only after they have attained full maturity. He insisted on staggered harvesting, as crop cutting in a single phase would only bring them losses and pose a risk. “Staggered harvesting practice would help growers secure better prices and improve returns,” Mr. Sumit Kumar said.

The Collector said that pulp units in the district were ready to procure Totapuri mangoes until the end of August. “This will give farmers adequate time to assess market conditions before selling their produce. They should adopt recommended measures, including the installation of methyl eugenol traps to control fruit fly infestation and maintain fruit quality,” he added.
