Malkajgiri police have identified 43 accident black spots and 20 hotspots requiring urgent intervention, with NH-65 (Vijayawada Highway) continuing to be the most accident-prone road in the region.

As part of the fourth phase of the ‘Arrive Alive’ road safety campaign, police and civic authorities conducted awareness programmes on Wednesday at five major accident-prone locations: Kuntloor T-junction in Hayathnagar, Kothagudem X road U-turn in Abdullapurmet, Bowenpally police station junction, Uppal X roads and Rathifile bus stand signal in Secunderabad.

According to data shared by the police, 1,466 road accidents were reported in the commissionerate limits, with 401.8 kilometre road network, between January and May 2026. Of these, 134 were fatal accidents, claiming 143 lives.

Police said NH-65 recorded 259 accidents and 17 deaths during the first five months of the year, making it the most dangerous stretch in the commissionerate limits.

A review of accident trends led authorities to identify 43 black spots and 20 hot spots where engineering improvements and enforcement measures are needed. In 2025, the commissionerate had identified 50 black spots that accounted for 342 fatal and grievous injury crashes and 232 deaths.

To address the issue, police and other stakeholders have proposed measures including rectification of black spots, improved road engineering, installation of warning signboards, enhanced highway patrolling, creation of designated parking facilities at vulnerable locations and stricter traffic enforcement.

Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi urged motorists to follow traffic rules, avoid over-speeding and drunken driving, and use helmets and seat belts. Citizens were also encouraged to assist accident victims during the critical golden hour.
