Archives hold the key to understanding how societies evolve, and preserving them is essential for future generations, said Sports and Youth Affairs Minister O.J. Janeesh. He was inaugurating the International Archives Week 2026 celebrations at St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram on June 10. Mr Janeesh said archives offer invaluable insights into the development of governance, education and social systems across different periods of history. Referring to language as an example, he noted that understanding the origin and evolution of communication helps people appreciate cultural and societal changes over time. He commended the State Archives Department for its efforts to preserve historical records and make them accessible to the public. The Minister also distributed prizes to the winners of a quiz competition held during the week. An exhibition showcasing the achievements and activities of the State Archives Department was organised on the sidelines of the event. Palayam Ward Councillor S. Shirley, Zoo Director Manjula Devi, ..Joint Secretary of the Directorate of Culture Rajini M, and S. Dineshan, Director of the State Archives Department, and members of the school faculty were present.
