Cyprus has launched a new voluntary repatriation program targeting approximately 20,000 Syrian nationals with asylum or subsidiary protection. The initiative offers financial incentives for individuals and families to return to Syria, with a unique provision allowing one family member to remain in Cyprus for employment until August 2028. This scheme, largely funded by the EU, aims to facilitate returns by providing financial support and enabling continued economic contribution to families back home. Officials cite a relative political stabilization in Syria and changes in protection criteria as reasons for the program's implementation. Since December 2024, around 5,000 Syrians have already departed or withdrawn asylum applications.
The program aims to address changing conditions in Syria and potential labor shortages in Cyprus by facilitating voluntary returns while offering continued financial support through one family member's employment.
