GM Energy Adds V2G, New Battery Chemistry
Electric vehicle sales might be better now than the end of last year when demand fell off a cliff following the surge of purchases ahead of the end of the federal financial incentives, but it's clear they haven't panned out as well as many in the automotive industry had hoped. Still, at a GM event Ars attended in San Francisco this week, the company continues to stick to its guns with an EV lineup spanning its brands. The automaker shared that it has also been working toward
General Motors is expanding its EV infrastructure support by enabling vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities for its energy products, in addition to existing vehicle-to-home functionality. This move aims to help stabilize the electrical grid, particularly as demand increases from sources like data centers. GM is collaborating with utility partners, including PG&E and DTE Energy, to implement this grid integration. Furthermore, GM Energy is partnering with Peak Energy to develop new sodium-ion batteries specifically designed for grid-scale energy storage solutions.
This development signifies a significant step in integrating electric vehicles and advanced battery technology into grid management, potentially alleviating infrastructure strain and supporting renewable energy integration.
