US Face Recognition System's Flaws Exposed by Wrongful Arrest
The ACLU is suing two Florida police departments over the arrest of a Fort Myers man in a child-abduction case, saying officers treated a flawed face-recognition match as a near-certain ID.
A Florida man, Robert Dillon, was arrested and jailed based on a faulty facial recognition match from the FACES system, operated by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. The system indicated a 93% match, despite Dillon living over 300 miles away and having no connection to the alleged crime in Jacksonville Beach. He was arrested at his home, held overnight, and had to pledge his truck title for bond.
This incident highlights significant concerns about the reliability of long-standing facial recognition technology used by law enforcement and its potential to lead to wrongful arrests.
