Victorian Schools to Implement Year 1 Maths Checks
The checks will become mandatory in all public primary schools from next year, but some principals warn it isn’t the best use of resources.
Over 400 primary schools in Victoria are set to introduce a new numeracy assessment for Year 1 students next term. This initiative aims to pinpoint students who might be struggling with mathematics and require additional support. The check, which will become compulsory for all public primary schools starting next year, focuses on a child's fundamental "number sense," including their ability to order, compare, and recognize quantities.
This program aims to address declining maths proficiency by enabling early identification and intervention for students at risk of falling behind.
