[Capital FM] Nairobi -- Kenya's public debt rose by 9 per cent in the first nine months of the 2025/26 financial year to Sh12.82 trillion as of March 31, pushing the country further above the legal debt threshold set by Parliament.

Kenya's public debt has climbed to Sh12.82 trillion as of March 31, 2026, marking a 9% increase over nine months and significantly exceeding Parliament's recommended debt limit. The Controller of Budget's report indicates the debt now stands 14.9 percentage points above the 55% of GDP threshold.

Domestic borrowing, particularly through Treasury bills and bonds, fueled the majority of this rise, while external debt also saw an increase. The report also highlights a concerning nearly sixfold surge in spending outside of approved budgets under Article 223 of the Constitution, raising questions about fiscal discipline and budget oversight.

This escalating debt and increased reliance on unbudgeted spending pose significant risks to Kenya's economic stability and its ability to manage future financial obligations.
